Molise boasts a special reserve, the Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo biosphere reserve: an oasis of biodiversity in the heart of the upper Molise, recognized worldwide. Recommended to visit.
The biosphere reserves are special protected natural areas established in 1971 by UNESCO within the MaB (Man and Biosphere) program. They are sites of exceptional naturalistic interest, but they are also privileged poles for research, training, conservation and development of models of sustainable management of the territory.
To date, MaB reserves are 686 worldwide; 17 are those present in Italy and, among these, one is that of Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo, in the heart of the upper Molise. It extends over the territory of 7 municipalities (Carovilli, Chiauci, Pescolanciano, Pietrabbondante, Roccasicura, San Pietro Avellana, Vastogirardi), characteristic villages immersed in uncontaminated nature.
The Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo reserve includes 7 sites of community importance, characterized by the presence of habitats of community interest, forests, protected wildlife species and rare flower species, important archaeological sites (such as the Italic sanctuary of Pietrabbondante). It is an oasis of biodiversity in the heart of the upper Molise, which deserves a visit in every season of the year.
