In Molise there is a very particular way of celebrating the Saint Joseph’s Day. In many villages large tables are prepared according to an ancient ritual.
There is a precise pattern to be respected, which is handed down orally from father to son. A tradition, religious and popular, that Molise shares with the rest of central-southern Italy, albeit with variations on the theme.
A special lunch consisting of 13 courses, which lasts until late afternoon. The preparation is laborious and meticulous. A painting, a statue or an image depicting the saint cannot be missing.
What are the rules to follow?
First of all the number of courses. Generally these are 13 dishes, but in some countries it can go up to 19.
Dishes. Which? They may vary according to villages and families but in general they are ‘poor’ dishes, based on legumes (chickpeas, peas, beans, lentils) and vegetables (salad, cauliflower, broccoli) variously cooked according to tastes, but also pasta (spaghetti with anchovies, spaghetti with breadcrumbs), cod, homemade bread, desserts and wine.
A very interesting tradition. A really special way to celebrate Father’s Day.
