An exhibition at the State Archive in Campobasso investigates a little-known page of Molise history: the internment camps in Molise.
An exhibition inaugurated by the State Archive of Campobasso, on the Memorial Day, helps to shed light on a little-known page of Molise history. ‘Jews and concentration, internment and work camps in Molise. 1940-1943 ’will be open until February 14, 2020.
The existence of 5 internment camps in the then province of Campobasso, in Agnone, Bojano, Casacalenda, Isernia and Vinchiaturo, is probably unknown to most. How many Jews were interned? Fabrizio Nocera, professor at the University of Molise, speaks of 260 Jews. «Of these, 98 were rescued, while 20 of them were transferred to Auschwitz before 8 September. From that hell only one woman has survived».
