New archaeological discoveries in the Roman city of Saepinum and in the lower Molise.
The archaeological Molise continues to hold surprises. During the last excavation campaign of the archaeological area of Saepinum-Altilia, a few kilometers from Campobasso, the remains of a Roman temple have been found, dating back to the beginning of the 1st century. d.C., in the area of the Forum.
The research, conducted by the Archaeological Superintendence of Molise, has allowed us to know in detail the construction phases of the temple: from the construction during the great urban plan of the Augustan age up to the abandonment of the structure with the fall of the Western Roman Empire, to the reuse of construction materials and the use of the area as a necropolis.
New tiles are therefore added to the history of the charming Saepinum: another reason to visit the perfectly preserved Roman town.
New archaeological sites have instead been identified in the lower Molise, in the coastal area, during the works for the construction of the Larino-Chieti methane pipeline. The remains seem to be attributable to necropolis and residential and agricultural settlements ranging from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
