It is well known that Molise does not have a “tourist vocation”. This is confirmed by Eurostat data on tourism and European regions referred to 2017, which declare Molise the least touristy region of Europe.
The most striking datum refers to the number of nights spent in tourist facilities in a year (2017), which in Molise is just over 42,000 nights. The first region ranked in Italy, Veneto region, records more than 47 million nights a year.
Obviously such news does not fill us with pride, and it certainly does not surprise us. However, it also makes us think about the paradigm “tourism = development”. Who said that tourism is necessarily beneficial for a territory and a socio-economic context? It depends. A mass tourism can also irremediably alter the balance of a territory: many too popular destinations have to face the problems of over-tourism.
None of this is likely to happen in Molise, the least visited region of Europe!
Molise will probably never be a tourist region in the classic sense of the word. There is still too much to do. It should aim for a niche tourism, for those who appreciate its beauty.
