The international museum of the world wars in Rocchetta a Volturno, in province of Isernia, was born to preserve the memory of the two global conflicts, which triggered many losses also in Molise.
During the second world war, after September 1943, Rocchetta a Volturno was occupied by the German troops and so a part of the population escaped. The most relevant military event was in the 31 March 1944, the Italian troop of Liberation attached the top of the mountain and defeated the German troops in the Marrone’s mount battle, in the mountains of Mainarde.
With a surprise attack during the night, the Italian alpines occupied the top of the Marrone’s mountain moving away the German troops. At these battles took part the alpine battalion “Piemonte” and other elements of the XXIX and XXXIII battalion of the third Bersaglieri Regiment, the first company of motorbiker of the C.I.L, the paratroopers of the Division Paratroopers “Nembo”. The Italian troops were sustained also by North African troops of the French expeditionary force from the mountain.
The international Museum of the world wars, which was was built in the 2010, is located inside an ancient oil mill. Walking through the rooms you will have the opportunity to relive the battles seeing over 330 models of arms from the several armed forces of the ‘900, admiring 150 original uniforms from the military troops of the two World War. But the life and the military activity are documented also with other equipment such as flags and materials of propaganda like medals and stamps.
