The castle of Cerro a Volturno is one of the most beautiful castles in Molise. It stands on the top of a spur of rock, dominating the upper Volturno valley with its grandeur.
Molise is a land of castles: most of the Molise villages preserves the remains of a manor, a tower, a city wall.
The castle of Cerro a Volturno is one of the most beautiful castles in Molise. It stands on the top of a spur of rock in Cerro a Volturno, a mountain village of medieval origin in the heart of the upper Volturno valley, at the beginning of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
The Dutch artist Escher was so impressed by the beauty of Cerro al Volturno that he made a splendid woodcut with the castle overlooking the village below.
The origins of the castle date back to the end of the 10th century, to the Lombard domination, but its present appearance dates back to the 15th-16th century. It has undergone many transformations over the centuries and changed owners; today the castle houses a hotel.
It can only be reached on foot. From the top you can enjoy a wonderful view of the valley, the mountains and the village below.
